Public Invited To Rackliffe House
BERLIN – The Rackliffe House Trust invites the public to attend a presentation by Dr. G. Ray Thompson, professor of history and director of the Edward H. Nabb Center for Delmarva History and Culture at Salisbury University, on Thursday, July 18, at 11 a.m. The talk is titled "Bogerternorton Hundred and its Early Settlement." Thompson will offer an illustrated presentation that will outline the early development of the seaside of Worcester County, looking at how the Bogerternorton Hundred developed in the late 17th century. Attention will also be paid to examining early maps of the Eastern Shore and the boundary dispute between Maryland and Virginia. Finally, some of the prominent early settlers of the area will be identified, with particular attention being paid to the important Rackliffe family and its socio-economic position during the first two centuries of occupation of the Synepuxent area of Worcester County. The presentation will be held in the auditorium of the Assateague Island Visitor Center located on Marsh View Lane near Berlin. Attendees are encouraged to visit Rackliffe House following the lecture. Rackliffe Plantation House, constructed in the 1740s, has been restored to its 18th-century grandeur through the efforts of the Rackliffe House Trust and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. RSVPs are requested, as space is limited. For questions or to RSVP, contact Jim Rapp at 443-614-0261 or dlitedirector@comcast.net.
