As donors, Kathy and Andy Cresci helped fund Sequoia's first linear accelerator,
a then-new technology used to deliver targeted doses of radiation precisely on
cancer cells, while preserving the surrounding tissue. Kathy openly shared her own
powerful story as a cancer survivor, helping to motivate donors and encourage those
facing the disease. She continued her involvement with Sequoia and in 2000 was
elected to the Sequoia Hospital Foundation's
Board of Directors.
Never identifying as a cancer victim, Kathy
continued to share her own story with the
community and in 2002 she and Andy
co-chaired the Foundation's East Meets West
gala. Together they inspired others to support
the hospital's programs and to assure that
world-class care was available to their friends,
family, and neighbors. When discussions began
regarding the new Sequoia Hospital, the Cresci's
were outspoken ambassadors for the hospital.
As a member of the Foundation Board, Kathy
helped to guide the Capital Campaign in
support of the project. Though she continued
to face cancer, Kathy was a tireless advocate
and was appointed to Sequoia Hospital's
Community Advisory Council and elected Vice
Chair of the Foundation's Board of Directors
before concluding her nine-year term.
In Fall 2011, after a 13-year battle with cancer,
Kathy Cresci passed away peacefully at home,
surrounded by Andy, Lisa, and her loving family.
Her enduring legacy continues to fill the halls
of Sequoia Hospital.
Foundation events provide grateful patients and prospective
donors a forum to learn more about the hospital and the
foundation while allowing existing donors to identify their
opportunity for impact.
In 1985, in the Foundation's early days, legendary actor and
comedian Bob Hope entertained our Foundation guests and in
2012 we continued the tradition welcoming another legendary
performer, Dr. Bill Cosby. Honoring his
boyhood friend, esteemed Sequoia cardiologist,
Dr. Edward Anderson. Dr. Cosby entertained
a sold-out room of Foundation guests at the
Ritz-Carlton in Half Moon Bay. Proceeds from
the event benefitted the Sequoia Hospital Heart
and Vascular Institute.
The traditional Foundation gala, like that hosted
by Kathy and Andy Cresci, and our annual food
and wine event were blended once again in 2012
to become the magical Under the Big Top evening.
Held in a new location, under the shade of the
oaks on a private Atherton estate, the event
was co-chaired by Lisa Ulibarri Kerns and Kelley
Roberts and benefitted the expansion of Sequoia
Hospital's award-winning Birth Center.
Closing the year was our annual Invitational Golf Tournament
co-chaired by Gregory Engel, M.D.; Beverly Joyce, M.D.; and Greg
Kemist. We were joined this year by PGA Tour and Champions
Tour veteran Mark Pfeil as we raised funds in support of Sequoia
Hospital's Emergency Department.
