ScHool newS Winter College: IU Winter College was in session Feb. 22–24, 2013, at the Grand Del Mar, a five-star resort nestled in San Diego’s Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve. The weekend included interactive classes led by some of Indiana University’s most dynamic professors. Dr. Steve Hitzeman, BA’72, OD’76, is the first IUSO faculty member to be selected for Winter College. Dr. Hitzeman, who is a consultant for TaylorMade, provided on-the-course instruction for using visual cues to improve putting performance. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Optical Fabrication Service: In response to the changing ophthalmic lens industry, the advent of new digital lens surfacing, and foreseeable needed equipment replacement, the full-scope ophthalmic lens surfacing lab at the school was phased out on June 30, 2013, and transitioned to an edging/finishing lab. This is estimated to save the clinic auxiliary $125,000–$140,000 per year. A focus on the finishing lab will provide IUSO students with a more realistic model of potential optical services, all from within the optometric practice setting. Irv Borish Continuing Education Symposium: In March, IUSO hosted faculty, students, alumni, and friends from around the country for the inaugural Irv Borish CE Symposium. Dr. Borish’s daughter, Fran Goldman, personally presented a check for $100,000 from her father’s estate in support of the Borish Center for Ophthalmic Research. IUSOCO: Dr. Julie Torbit, BS’91, OD’93, is the director of the new Indiana University School of Optometry Community Outreach program, which is the emergent successor to the very successful ECCO (Eye Care Community Outreach) program in Indianapolis. Unique Features to IUSOCO IUSO faculty in Indianapolis and Bloomington work with fourth-year optometry students to treat IUSOCO patients. This collaboration enhances students’ educational experiences. The IUSOCO program is uniquely qualified to provide care to underserved populations throughout central Indiana. Community partnerships play an important role in identifying patients who need assistance.
