Visiting in Vashti
by Bruce Specht
Hello Friends!
The saying for the week is:
"The poorest of all men is not the
man without a cent but the man
without a dream."
It has been two weeks since
I had the chance to sit down
and write a column. It is nice to
share all the happenings that have
taken place over that time frame
tonight. It doesn't happen often
enough but I took some time off
from the daily routine and packed
up the car for some time away
from the farm. The destination
this time was Georgia with some
time spent in all the states in
between as well as a night spent
in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Kayla
joined in this time as we used
the travel as an excuse to take
some Graduation pictures for her
announcement to be sent out in
the next month. We made stops in
several locations in north Georgia
and Alabama to get just the right
photos. But fi rst on the agenda
was stopping in to visit friends
that we haven't seen in several
years. It was wonderful seeing
four diff erent families and getting
the chance to catch up on all their
changes that life has thrown them.
Some good and some sad but that
is what happens when you are
living out a life full of purpose.
The best surprise of the trip
came after a visit with a former
deputy friend. We were up in the
Georgia mountains heading south
when we came upon a fi eld of
sunfl owers in full bloom. Now
this was a special moment for
Kayla because we had driven
all over central Texas when she
graduated from Bellevue High
trying to get a picture of her
in such a fi eld but to no avail.
To top it off they were having a
fall festival with professional
photographers available to take
your photo amoung the blooms.
A quick stop made her day and
we have several photos of her
smiling at her good fortune.
As nice as it was to travel it
was even nicer to see the home
lights of Vashti when we returned
last Monday. There is always a
lot of things to catch up on when
you have been gone fi ve days and
Shelley had her hands full doing
just that. I even found myself
having to repack a bag for a
couple days on the road.
I did make it back in time for
the Vashti Community Center
Fundraiser held on Saturday. It
turned out to be a very warm day
and it was nice to enjoy the air
conditioning of the new Center
while dining on the savory brisket
being served up that evening.
On behalf of the board let me
extend our thanks to all those
who attended and made this a
success. That includes all the
various businesses that provided
door prizes and other items
to be raffl ed or auctioned off
during the evening. The nights
proceeds exceeded $12,000 and
after expenses netted the Center
over nine thousand. Thank you
to all the folks that took the time
to bake up those special cakes
and pies that found their way
into the auction as well. This is
only the second time the Center
has had a Fall fundraiser and we
are looking forward to seeing
you next October. One piece of
information that I failed to pass
along is this. In the year the new
center has been in use it has had
over eighty days of use during the
year. That means that the Center,
on average, is used once every
four days. Whether that is for
the monthly potlucks, Tuesday
Night All Acoustic Jams, family
reunions, wedding receptions,
or other gatherings it is getting
utilized by the community and
those of surrounding communities
as well. Thank you again for your
generous contributions that keep
the Center growing.
Remember the All Acoustic
Music Jam fi lls the Vashti
Community Center from 6:30 -
9:00 p.m. each Tuesday. There is
always a large gathering of folks
that come out and put on a fi ne
jamboree. There is no charge even
though donations are accepted to
help defray the costs.
In your prayers this week
please remember Allene Peek,
Larry Belcher, Debra Carner,
Dane Lancaster, Gary Ferguson,
Jeff rey Padgett, Ava Lawson,
Josie Wise, Kay and Earnest
Perkins, Grover Watkins, Dewey
Staley, Sue Phillips, Wanda
Molsbee, Trey Spivey, JoAnn
Spivey, Bill Bartlett, B.J. Tate,
Garrett Nunn, and Philip Lawson.
Please remember to keep Tyler
Galligher and all those from
our area actively serving in the
military at this time.
