The opening verse of the book of Obadiah contains this phrase: “… We have heard a rumour from the Lord, …” So Obadiah lets us in on a secret, and it’s simply this: God spreads rumors! I’m guessing that may come as a surprise to some people. We might find that hard to believe, given what we know concerning how a rumor is defined: a story or statement talked of as truth, but without any proof that it is true. That’s why the Scriptures warn us against tale bearing. Spreading stories about others, whether the stories are true or not, can be very damaging. So why would Obadiah let us know that God spreads rumors? Is he accusing God of getting involved in spreading hurtful information about you or someone else? Absolutely not! If you were to study the meaning of this word “rumour” in Scripture, you would understand that it means “doctrine, announcement, news, report” in the sense of something you should continually hear. His rumors are not hurtful gossip, but they are declarations of positive and prophetic things that will come to pass! So I convey to you today that you don’t have to fear when God starts spreading rumors. When He speaks, He does so in power and authority. Lay hold of every Scripture as truth that will come to pass. Embrace His promises. Let it be said that we desire for God to spread rumors concerning us!
