The Shopper Jim Bowie Days Pioneer Court Duchess Lois Neese was born July 31, 1941 in Wetaskiwin, Alberta Canada. She lived there until 1962 and moved to the USA when she married Alton D. Neese, a member of the United States Air Force. They have lived in California, Arkansas, Indiana, Tennessee and Newfoundland. Lois always stayed stateside to raise their two sons, Russell and Mark, while her husband had two tours in South East Asia in the late 1960s and TDY trips to England, Greece and Germany. Alton retired from the Air Force in 1975 and Lois retired in 2004 as Secretary-Treasurer of Timberline International. In 2004, she and Alton moved to Sunset, to live near their son Mark. He and his wife, Tammy, have a son, Brock, who will be a freshman at Bowie High School. Their oldest son, Russell, and his wife, Sue, live in Springdale, AR, near their two daughters. Their oldest daughter, Ashley, and her husband David live in Sherwood, AR with their two children, Olivia and Troy. Their youngest daughter, Samantha, is a student at the University of Arkansas. She has spent several summers with Lois and Alton in Bowie, where she often attended Jim Bowie Days. Lois is a member of the Red River Master Gardeners and the TEEA club and a member of St. Jerome Catholic Church, where she met Carla 13 years ago and is honored to serve with her as a duchess. Lois has always enjoyed the Jim Bowie Days celebration and has taken her grandchildren to enjoy all the activities. One of her favorite memories was when her grandson, Brock, was the Tiny Tot King in 2006. Country living close to a small town like Bowie is a wonderful life for this retired couple. Joy for Buffalo Springs I'm home!! It's like the song says, "I've Been Everywhere, Man!" I have seen Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Canada Border, Pennsylvania, Delaware, DC, Maryland, and Virginia, all in 19 days! Some of the prettiest country I've ever seen is Maine and New Hampshire. As my step-son, Curtis Whittington, will say, "There's a picture at every bend in the road, just waiting". I've seen more pretty green trees, just lining the beautiful mountains! I've seen so sooo much water, rushing down streams, rivers, and canals! I've seen beautiful houses that will make you go OOOOhhhh and AAAAAhhhhh! I've seen traffic that will make you go "SHOOOOOOTTT!!!" I've seen antique stores on about every block or mile in New Hampshire!! It rained every day we were there, except for 2 days, but those clouds on the mountains was absolutely gorgeous!! Our first round of visiting kinfolks was Bo's son, Curtis Whittington and his wife Jewel, and their dog Dazee. Curtis and Jewel were super hostesses! They cooked for us, took us out to eat, and kept us seeing beautiful sights the whole 2 weeks we were there in New Hampshire. We flew from DFW to Portland, Maine on American Airlines. I love flying with American Airlines, but their new baggage policies stink! Jewel and Curtis picked us up at Portland Airport, and took us to Berlin, New Hampshire, where they live. They fed us seafood, and it was good!! I ordered Shrimp, and then finished off Curtis's fried oysters. I just have one thing to say, "Bo is NOT a seafood kinda guy." More on him later! I don't know what the highlight of that stay was, because every day was a new experience! Curtis took us every direction he could think of, including to the Canadian border, at Derby, Vermont. That little town is different. Half the town is Canada and the other half is USA. Trust me! Those guards of the border had their eye on us! We kinda wanted to venture into the Canada side of Derby, but there was a sign that changed our minds! We got the heck out of Dodge in a hurry! Monday we went to some antique shops and I took a zillion pictures! I had already taken a zillion on our way to Canada. You know....I don't remember what day we did what. LOL All I know is we saw lots of beautiful scenery and lots and lots of antique stores! I bought a few things: a clock, a key chain, an antique brown marbled door knob, and a couple of little brown jugs. (Not what you think! They might hold 2 oz.....they hold salt & pepper.) Goodness! I've seen so much in the last 19 days, it's getting confusing where we went and when!! On Sunday, I went with Robin to church (Greek Orthodox Church), but she had other plans for us. Another Thursday, June 22, 2017 11 by Carmen Harris Whittington sister, Debbie Pappas Steffes, was driving up to Clarksville, from Virginia to meet me. It was very nice meeting Debbie too. I was enjoying myself immensely meeting this new family (my Greek family). Sunday evening, we drove to Baltimore to a Seafood Restaurant on the Sea Port. There I was to meet my brother Chris Pappas, with his wife Teresa, and his son Mike (my nephew!). Someone since the vacation ask me if I was nervous. No, I really wasn't.....I don't think. Ha. When Chris got there, I recognized him and went to him, gave him a big hug, and said, "hello, little brother!" We all had a great seafood feast, thanks to Chris, but the best part of all was meeting family that I'd wanted to meet for years! Here I am 72, and finally got that wish. It was a wonderful visit, and I wouldn't take anything for this great meeting. That was just a little taste of what Heaven will be like! A Great Reunion Day! On Monday, I was blessed, by a visit to Chris's beautiful house! Another chance to have a short visit with my brother. His wife Teresa went with us to DC, and we took tons of pictures there, including one of me at my mom's apartment she lived in when she lived in Washington, DC during WWII, in 1943. An awesome, but overwhelming feeling. Debbie had her good camera and took lots of pictures for me.Thank you so much Debbie!! You're a doll! Another highlight was going to Trump International Hotel, and having lunch! It was awesome!! Beautiful place! Thanks again Chris and Teresa for an awesome lunch! Somewhere in the middle of all this visiting, on Sunday, was visiting the Arlington International Cemetery, in Falls Church Virginia, where my dad, Gus Pappas, was buried in 1995. I had my picture taken there also! Well, the rest of the trip was all kinds of visiting, and the last thing we did that I also enjoyed was, Robin took us to a Greek Restaurant called Yia Yia's Kitchen. Yia Yia meaning grandmother. Robin went all out, as Chris did also. We had some of about everything! The next morning the visit ended, with tears. I was ready to go home, but not ready to part with my sister, Robin, Debbie, or Chris. It was a great visit. Thank you Chris, Robin, Debbie, Deana, Teresa, Mike, James, JP, Vincent, and Harli (the Golden Retriever). It was awesome and the last thing in my bucket list I really really wanted to do...meet my Pappas's. I will be back!! Everyone, don't forget this week was West Fork Youth Camp at Vashti. It will be over on Friday, so go out when you get the paper, and visit their evening service. God Bless everyone, and thank you for the prayers for our safe travels!!
