backdrop for the works of art and displays to
be exhibited in the space. This was achieved
through the use of neutral materials--primarily
concrete, wood and plaster--and by exposing
the beautiful, structural bowstring trusses
original to the building. Today, the renovated
building houses the collection of Riverside-born
artist Miné Okubo, who left her collection of
letters, paintings and drawings to RCCD.
Sustainable Features:
Riverside Community College District's (RCCD)
architectural treasure, the Center for Social
Justice and Civil Liberties, is a historic building
that for more than 50 years was "masked"
under a brick and steel frame. With strategic
intervention from the Old Riverside Foundation,
RCCD learned that a 1920s building was
beneath the façade installed in the 1960s.
With the removal of the `60s façade, the design
team discovered an ornately carved building
by Stiles Oliver Clements, one of Southern
California's most celebrated architects. The
10,000-square-foot two-story Spanish Colonial
Revival building is an excellent example of
Clements' exuberant themed designs and is his
only building in Riverside County. Interestingly,
a vintage postcard documented the building's
original appearance and served as a guide
to return the building exterior to its "period of
significance."
While the exterior was faithfully returned to its
original design, the interior of the Center for
Social Justice and Civil Liberties had to satisfy
the need for an open, modern exhibit space.
LPA's design team wanted to provide a clean
Scope.
