Let's discuss a subject that is often talked
about and at times questioned by the
public and the construction and design
industry: Are design awards important?
I believe it is a simple answer: Yes, design
awards are important because they celebrate
a collective dream that becomes a reality.
A district's board dreams of an environment
that promotes lifelong learning, a community
dreams of a home to showcase a local artist's
collection or students dream of a space that is
centeredontheirhealthandwell-being.Each
of these dreams, when translated into physical
form, illustrates that a built environment has
the power to change lives.

held up as examples in our communities,
they inspire and enrich us all. What could be
more important than that?
On September 19, at the 2013 AIA Orange
