The Coastline Community College Newport
Beach Campus presented our design
team at LPA with a unique challenge of
creating a collegiate campus setting within
a single building. The building serves as a
"one-stop" college campus that provides
a comprehensive range of educational
environments including adult education
classrooms, science labs and a community
art gallery.
This three-story LEED Gold designed
building was positioned to take advantage
of the site's climatic gifts of ocean breezes,
access to daylight and unobstructed
views of the Pacific Ocean. Other notable
sustainable features include 100% rainwater
retention on site, a student accessible roof
garden that acts as a central campus quad
and a two-story naturally ventilated indoor/
outdoor veranda. The roof garden and
veranda are designed to engage students
in the art of conversation, extending the
learning experience beyond the classroom.
Coastline's Newport Beach Campus functions
as a sustainable living laboratory, where each
student is made more acutely aware of their
natural environment. Ultimately, the campus
acts as a gateway to a better life through
higher education.
