SOPER BERLIN – Good news continues to abound for Decatur’s varsity wrestling program, which turned in a strong performance at the Iron Horse Duals last weekend, has two wrestlers on the cusp of their milestone 100th wins and has soared into the top echelon in the rankings of high school programs across the state. The Seahawks competed in the whirlwind Iron Horse Duals at C. Milton Wright in Harford County last week along with some of the top high school programs in the state. The tournament was scheduled for two days last Friday and Saturday, but because weather canceled school in Harford County on Friday, the event was condensed into a single day on Saturday. Decatur had five matches in a single day at the Iron Horse Duals on Saturday and came away with a 2-3 record, although the final count is not entirely indicative of how the Seahawks performed. SOPER Decatur Boys Edge Washington, 77-73 SPORTS EDITOR Decatur defeated Western Tech, 63-15 and North Carroll, 46-31, but then ran into some stiff competition against highly ranked teams and performed admirably. The Seahawks lost to numberseven Huntingtown, 37-22, then narrowly lost another match to eighth-ranked Georgetown Prep, 39-30. In it last match of the tournament, Decatur fell to 17th-ranked Hereford, 38-30. The Seahawks are now ranked 18th out of the 200 public and private schools in the state. The accolades are expected to continue for the Decatur program with two wrestlers on the cusp of reaching significant personal milestones. Both Nick Bennett and Andrew Borradaile will enter next Wednesday’s tri-meet with CambridgeSouth Dorchester and Mardela with 99 wins in their high school careers and each is expected to pick up their milestone 100th wins. Just last week, Borradaile, a senior standout football player, wrestler and baseball player, committed to the Naval Academy Prep School for next year. By SHAWN J. SOPER SPORTS EDITOR BERLIN – Showing no signs of rust following the long holiday break, Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity basketball team cruised past visiting Washington, 62-30, on Tuesday to improve to 8-2 on the season. In their first regular season game after the winter break, the Seahawks jumped out to a big early lead on the Jaguars at home on Tuesday and never looked back. Marina Jones got Decatur on the board early with a put-back and a 20 lead before Dayona Godwin scored on three straight layups to put Decatur ahead 8-0 with just over a minute into the game. Washington got on the board with a layup at the 5:32 mark in the first, but a jumper by Jones and two more fast break buckets by Godwin pushed the lead to 14-2. Jillian Petito and Godwin each scored to extend the lead to 16-2 before the Jaguars picked up their second basket of the game at the 1:32 mark to cut the lead to 16-4. Godwin added two more layups in the closing minute of the first and the quarter ended with Decatur leading 22-4. At the start of the second, Washington converted three free throws to cut the lead to 22-7, but the Seahawks responded with a layup by Lexie Van Kirk to push the lead to 24-7. Erin Florek scored a layup off a nice assist and Ellie Bargar made a free throw to extend the Seahawk lead to 27-9 with just over five minutes remaining. Florek then converted two straight jumpers to extend the lead to 31-9 before Washington stopped the bleeding with a threepointer to cut the lead to 31-12. Jones and Godwin each scored late in the second and the Seahawks took a 37-12 lead into intermission. Decatur really started to pull away at the start of the third quarter with an 8-0 run. Petito started the run with a layup off a nice assist by Ally Beck. Godwin scored twice and Payton Van Kirk scored once during the run to extend the lead to 45-2. Washington stopped the run with a jumper from the corner with just over five minutes left in the period to cut the lead to 45-15. Jones scored on a turnaround jumper, than scored again off nice assists by Godwin and Petito to push the lead to 49-15. Another layup by Petito extended the lead to 51-15 with time running down in the third. A jumper from the corner by the Jaguars cut the lead to 51-17 with just over a minute left in the period and another bucket just before the end of the third cut the lead to 5119. The two late buckets in the third carried over to the start of the fourth as Washington scored on three straight trips down the floor to cut the Decatur lead to 51-25. However, Barger then scored on a nice assist from Petito to stop the run and extend the lead to 53-25. A jumper by Beck and a layup by Godwin extended the lead to 57-25. Godwin hit a long three-pointer to push the lead to 60-25. Blair Yesko ended the scoring for Decatur with a layup late in the fourth to complete the Seahawks’ rout, 62-30. SOPER Beach Lacrosse Set For 21st Season SPORTS EDITOR In their first regular season game since the holiday break, the Seahawks traveled to Washington High on a bitterly cold Tuesday evening and edged the Jaguars, 77-73. Next up for Decatur is a home game with county rival Snow Hill tonight, followed by a non-conference road game against Seaford on Monday. BERLIN – The Beach Lacrosse Program, which is about to enter its 21st season in Worcester County, is now holding registration and has a few events planned for this month and next. Beach Lacrosse is the original youth lacrosse program in the county and was founded in 1994, providing the very first spring season of organized youth recreational lacrosse on the Lower Shore. The program now has over 300 young players competing in recreational lacrosse from pre-K to eighth grade. The mission of the non-profit charitable organization is to provide area youth with the opportunity to learn and compete in the oldest game native to North America in a sportsmanlike manner. Beach Lacrosse again this year will field multiple teams for boys and girls in several age categories including under-9, under-11, under13 and under-15. For children in pre-K and kindergarten just starting out, a Scooper’s program is offered for boys and girls. Beach Lacrosse is a member of the Eastern Shore Youth Lacrosse Association and plays teams from across the shore including Salisbury, Cambridge, Easton, Kent Island, Denton, Lewes and Camden. All practices and home games are held in Berlin. Practice will start at the beginning of March with games, which are held on Saturdays, set to begin on March 22. Registration is now open at www.beachlax.org. Financial assistance is available for anyone in need. On Thursday, Jan. 23, Beach Lacrosse’s annual Parents Meeting will be held at the Holiday Inn Oceanfront Conference Center at 66th Street at 6:30 p.m. and all parents of current and future players are welcome to attend. On Friday, Feb. 21, a fundraiser will be held at the Cork Bar on Wicomico Street beginning at 7 p.m. The fundraiser will support new equipment purchases for the upcoming season. Beach Lacrosse is also actively seeking volunteer coaching assistance at all grade levels as well as volunteers for various activities that support the club.
