SOPER SPORTS EDITOR BIGGER, BETTER & MORE OCEAN CITY’S NEWEST SPORTS BAR! at 131st Street & Coastal Highway BERLIN – Decatur’s varsity indoor track teams turned in a strong performance in its first meet of the 2013-2014 season, placing near the top in both the men’s and women’s team competition and collecting several individual honors along the way. The Decatur boys finished second overall among the Bayside schools in the first meet of the season last Wednesday. Caesar Rodney was first, North Caroline was third and Kent Island was fourth. On the girls’ side, Decatur finished fourth overall as a team. Cape Henlopen was first, Caesar Rodney was second and Kent Island was third. In the individual events for Decatur, Kyle Kelly took first place in the 300, Patrick Phillips took first in the shot put and Jakhai Woodard took first in the long jump. James Mapp was third in the 300, Daniel Winters was third in the 500 and Khaalid Collick was third in the long jump. Mapp finished fourth in the 55meter dash, Lucas Duker was fourth in the 55-meter hurdles, and Woodard was third in the 300. Zach Wat- ters finished fifth in the pole vault. In the high jump, Duker was seventh, Ben Short was 9th and Collick was 10th. Noah McAleer was eighth in the 3,200 and Zach Elmer was eighth in the 1,600. In the relays, the Decatur boys finished second in the 4x400, eighth in the 4x200 and eighth in the 4x800. In the girls’ individual events, Ameerah Lewis finished first in the shot put and Layla Fowler finished first in the 500. Kacie Moore was second in the pole vault, while Katie Collins was fourth. Hannah Wilson finished third in the high jump, while Annie Brown was seventh and Alexandra Saunders was eighth. Alexandra Tushup was sixth in the 3,200, while Jenna Abbaticchio finished seventh. Brown was also seventh in the 300, Chloe FauntLeroy was seventh in the 1,600, Jenna Leitgeb was seventh in the 500, and Wilson was seventh in the triple jump. Shikeera Collick was eighth in the 55 meter dash, while Emily Kolarik was eighth in the 55 hurdles. Leitgeb also finished eighth in the 800. BERLIN – The 6th Annual Reindeer Run 5K last Saturday through the heart of downtown Berlin was once again a huge success with over 250 runners competing. The annual race, which has become a fixture on the local holiday schedule since its inception five years ago, is sponsored by Live Long Fitness. The course started and finished at the Atlantic Hotel and headed down Main Street around the Worcester Prep campus and the North- ern Worcester Athletic Complex before ending up back in front of the hotel. With the town decorated, the event was the perfect kick-off to the holiday season in Berlin. This year, 254 runners competed in the sixth annual event. Dave Rovansek of Berlin finished first, while Berlin’s Bobby Hammond finished second. Finishing in third place was Ben Schofield. The following are highlights of some of this week’s action: •Sea Colony Tennis 39-Delmarva Irish Club 36: Tajeem Woodland scored 19 points, Max Mariner scored eight and Colin Eitel added six as Sea Colony beat Delmarva Irish Club. Quinn Ebaugh scored 19 to lead the Delmarva Irish Club in the loss. •OC-Berlin Optimists 64-Ocean City FOP 35: Aaron Waples scored 20, Karon Purnell pitched in 17 and Vinnie Catrino added eight as the Optimists prevailed over the FOP.
