Recently we sat down with Ron Hue, one of our greatest
supporters, to hear a little bit about our history.
How did you first get involved?
I got a call from Billie Jane Lampson. My assistant
said, a lady named Billie Jane needs to talk with you...
now (chuckles). Billie stated, "We are building a cancer
center. Do you want to help?" I told Billie I needed to
look at my schedule. Her reply, "No Ron, this has to
happen." She wouldn't take no for an answer.
How did the community get involved?
There were many different types of fundraisers that
took place. We had crab feeds, people flew in lobsters...
there wasn't anything on the fundraising arm that wasn't
attempted. The community raised an impressive $1.3
million. It truly was a community effort, $5 here and
$10 dollars there and before we knew if we had raised
over $1 million.
You have also served on our Governing and
Foundation boards. What positions have you held?
Many years ago I served as Vice President and Treasurer
of the Governing Board. Since that time, I have served
on the Foundation Board, in various roles, for a number
of years. My term on the Foundation Board recently
ended. However, I currently serve on the committee for
the HAPO Golf Classic supporting the Tri-Cities Cancer
Center Foundation. I also serve on the Foundation
Board's Investment and Nominating Committees.
What has been the biggest change you have seen
over the past twenty years?
Continued growth. The expansion of the Ralph R.
Peterson Cancer Resource Library and the Resource
Center are two great examples. Both offer countless
benefits to those faced with a cancer diagnosis as well
as providing resources for their families and caregivers.
Having all of these things available in one place with
someone to talk to makes the Tri-Cities Cancer Center
truly unique amongst treatment facilities, whether here
or in a big city. The addition of medical oncology on
site made the Tri-Cities Cancer Center a one-stop shop.
The expansion to the west end of the building to house
CBHO is absolutely beautiful and functional.
What keeps you connected to the Cancer Center?
My many friends and family who have had cancer.
Until there is a cure, our community needs access to
the highest quality cancer treatment without having to
travel out of the area. The Cancer Center is one of the few
successful endeavors the community has accomplished.
It is a great example of what can be done.
Bringing the cancer center to fruition was a difficult
road at times. But, it was a worthy one to go down.
