to his radiation and chemotherapy team. His physicians
laughed and explained it would take longer than one
month for him to complete his treatment. Steve kindly
replied that anything past July 14th was unacceptable.
After some strong negotiation, an acceptable, albeit
aggressive, treatment schedule was developed.
Success...cancer free.
Steve walked Kristen down
the aisle on July 14th 2011. "I
wasn't in the best shape. But,
I did it," stated Steve. Since
that time he has witnessed the
birth of his first grandchild and
continues a healthy lifestyle
that includes daily exercise
and a very healthy diet packed
with cancer fighting goodness.
Steve is still on medication
and will continue this course
of treatment until June of
2014. Even though he is very
active, he is quick to point
out, "I am still recovering."
However, tumor markers in
Steve's blood are so incredibly
low that Dr. Rado has referred
to him as his "poster child"
and Steve considers himself
cancer free. While Steve might
not be playing the odds...he has certainly beaten them
considering the severity of his diagnosis.
Giving credit where credit is due.
"God, family, the Tri-Cities Cancer Center [including
CBHO], and friends," this is who Steve credits for the
success of his return to health. He made a point of calling
the individual team members of the Tri-Cities Cancer
Center and CHBO out by name, stating, "They are the
best." Taking nothing for granted, Steve maintains his
health by working out daily and eating healthy. He does
not consume alcohol, sugar or red meat. He eats a low-
carb diet and enjoys chicken, fish and soy all with a host
of herbs and spices added for
flavor.
Steve had the following to
say, when asked how cancer
has impacted his life: "Cancer
changes your priorities.
Material goods are not as
important. Compassion. I have
a lot more compassion. I am
more accepting of people, their
beliefs and their positions."
He went on to explain that
he has reduced his stress by
embracing these ideals. Steve
recognizes he is not in control
and often needs to "go with the
flow."
Steve's parting comments
were, "You must stay
healthy. Life is wonderful.
Life is hard. Be prepared
for death...it is a part of life." Just sitting down with
Steve to capture a sliver of his story was an amazing
experience. We get the feeling that every day is an
adventure with Steve. While reflecting on his cancer
journey, Steve summed up his experience by stating:
"I was invited to the party...and I danced."
