Lung
Cancer
Screening
Meet Bob Wiggins. We first met Bob when he was being treated for prostate
cancer here at the Tri-Cities Cancer Center. During a routine follow up visit, one
of our physicians listened to his breathing. Knowing his history as a smoker, it was
recommended he participate in our Lung Screening Program.
"I figured after going through all the radiation prostate cancer, what's another
screening or another fight against cancer?" Bob has lost two brothers to lung cancer.
He also lost his father and his first cousin to lung disease. Due to his family history
and his thirty year history of smoking, Bob knew he was at a high risk for lung cancer.
We asked Bob what his experience was with our Lung Screening Program. He
described it as "very relaxing." He went on to say, "You walk in, lay down, and are
done in ten minutes. The only hard part was waiting for the results." Within the
next week Bob was contacted by Nurse Navigator, Gretchen Saunders, and told
his screening came back clean. "I was so surprised, especially knowing how much
I used to smoke and my family history."
Today Bob lives a healthier lifestyle: he exercises more, attends checkups every
six months for prostate cancer and is scheduled to have his lungs screened on an
annual basis due to his history. Bob proudly told us, he has been free of cigarettes
for 2½ years. His message to the masses: "Don't smoke! If you are a longtime
smoker you need to get checked out. I encourage everyone to get checked."
