2015 WINNERs Australian Independent Bookseller IndIe BOOK AwArds Australian Independent Bookseller Australian independent booksellers have announced The Bush by Don Watson as the Indie Book Awards 2015 Book of the Year. The Indie Book Awards, now in its seventh year, are chosen by the country’s independent booksellers who select their favourite Australian books published in the previous calendar year. The individual category winners, in Fiction, Non-Fiction, Debut Fiction and Children’s & YA, were also announced. From these four category winners the independent booksellers selected the best of the best - the Indie Book Awards 2015 Book of the Year. Judges’ Comments: Don Watson takes the reader on a journey to discover the quintessential meaning of ‘the Bush’. Its relevance to today’s Australia combined with its deep knowledge and narrative of the history and importance of the bush, makes it essential reading for anyone interested in understanding how we got where we are and how we should best move forward. Don Watson’s essay-like style of connecting individual stories with broad social issues and historical trends makes for an engaging read. WINNER THE INDIE BOOK OF THE YEAR 2015 CATEGORY WINNER NON-FICTION CATEGORY WINNERs FICTION Golden Boys Australian Independent Bookseller DEBUT FICTION Foreign Soil Maxine Beneba Clarke CHILDREN’s & YA Withering-by-Sea Judith Rossell Sonya Hartnett Judges’ Comments: A suburban psychological novel deserving of a place alongside Christos Tsiolkas’ The Slap. Here is family dysfunction under a microscope – not only the concrete details of it, but also the intangible, the emotional, the intuitive, all rendered into prose with near-impossible clarity. Golden Boys is a novel about the dangerous boundaries of childhood – not a children’s book, but a book in which children prove to be darker and more complex characters than adults. Judges’ Comments: A startlingly original collection of short fiction. Beneba Clarke’s fearlessness with language and style is evident in these ten stories, all concerning— in one way or another—oppressed or displaced central characters. The diversity of location and voice demonstrates how accomplished a writer she is. They take us to new horizons and challenge our notions of who we are and what constitutes the meaning of place, refuge, belonging and home. Australian Independent Bookseller Judges’ Comments: Withering-By-Sea is a fantastic Victorian era mystery. Following the mis-adventures of Stella Montgomery as she tries to escape the evil Professor, this story is equal parts whimsy, darkness, and charm. Peppered throughout with beautiful illustrations and with a gorgeous jacket (that you can definitely judge this book by!), this is a thrilling first instalment to what I expect will be a series to rival the likes of “A Series of Unfortunate Events”.
