Volunteer Profile
Phuong Le
How many years have you been involved with Girls on the Run? I started with GOTRC the summer of 2002 – more than a decade ago! What volunteer roles have you taken on? Over the years, I’ve done just about everything! Early on, I volunteered at GOTRC races and helped manage water stations, cheering sections, and goody bag stuffing. Back then we did all of our season preparation in the Executive Director’s basement! I compiled curriculum materials and helped with other administrative tasks. More recently I’ve served as a running buddy and coach. I still coach today and am also happy to serve as a member of GOTRC’s Associate Board. Why Girls on the Run? What attracts you to the program? Growing up, I enjoyed being physically active and was involved with athletics. I was fortunate enough to be a member of numerous sports teams that were successful on and off the court. I developed meaningful, lifetime friendships with my teammates who helped me set goals, pushed me to work hard, and helped me succeed, even though I wasn’t always the best athlete. At each practice, we were able to laugh, have fun, motivate, and encourage each other. All I had to do was try my best and never give up! This mentality helped me in academics, as well as difficult social and emotional situations often faced by young women and girls. I was lucky to be surrounded by a group of friends with whom I could walk through life’s most difficult lessons and with whom I could grow up confident, happy, and healthy. Naturally, when I was introduced to GOTRC, it was the perfect match. Giving a young girl the same motivation, inspiration, encouragement, friendship, and achievement that I received growing up is a wonderful gift to give. I want the girls I coach to have these tools to help guide them as they grow. I want to make a lasting impression on them so they will never forget how important they are and all that they can do.
