This issue looks at the design of e3 Civic
High, a new charter school that will serve
the students of Downtown San Diego. An
unprecedented example, e3 Civic High, will
be located on the sixth and seventh floors
inside of the new Downtown Public Library.
Beyond co-location, the school and the
library share a co-mission of lifelong
learning, engaging students in an urban
environment that will prepare them for a
culture of success.
The programmatic design for e3 grew from
the charter board's core principles of high
standards for all, individual personalization
and authentic curriculum. Building on
personalization--creating an environment
that encourages students to own their
learning goals--the design encourages
social connections and flexible learning
environments. This blended learning space
transforms the sixth and seventh floors
into innovative and inspirational design
solutions for a high school.
Tracking LEED Gold certification, the
school within the library embraces
sustainability, community engagement and
the lifelong learner. Students of e3 Civic
High will experience 21st century learning
spaces, real-world inspired studios and
informal environments where every space
becomes a learning opportunity.
