Inspired by the historical pattern of growth of cities along the California Delta, the landscape design of
Brentwood Park also complements the architectural aesthetic of the Civic Center buildings--based on
Irving Gills' modern style. Preservation, sustainability, connectivity to downtown, and instilling community
pride were all critical program elements for the design of the park.
A fountain plaza near the City Hall building was designed with community and local artisan input through
the workshop process. A tile mural at the base of the fountain has images reflecting the agricultural his-
tory of the area. Existing mature trees, 29 of them, were preserved on the site. Two additional large exist-
ing oaks were relocated into the park area to make way for the building footprint. A colorful rose garden,
with decomposed granite pathways, invites strolling and provides color and opportunity for community
involvement, as well as a beautiful background to park activities.
A popular children's playground was preserved and enhanced with new rubberized safety surfacing,
and a water play splash-pad. This was located near the existing playground, and has proven to be very
popular, since opening day. Additionally, fun, artistic, reptile and animal forms were integrated into the
fence to delight children of all ages.
The Summer Concert Series and other performance events have a new home in the shaded stage area
with a large stage, complete with lighting and audio capabilities, facing the tree-studded park to the
southwest. A smaller, more intimate stage faces south, while the Brentwood Tower provides a backdrop
for the City's festivities.
The park.
Robert "Bob" Taylor,
Mayor of Brentwood
"
It is very exciting for our community. The people have responded, and welcomed the
Civic Center, with open arms. This is not for today, it's for the future ... it's all the citizens',
it's not the Mayor's, it's not the Council's, it is theirs.
