In this month's issue of LPA Studies, we
take a look at a civic project that truly
exemplifies the integration of interior and
exterior architecture.
The Brentwood Civic Center, in the
East Bay region of the San Francisco
Bay Area, includes three new facilities:
a 60,000-square-foot City Hall, a
32,000-square-foot Community Center, and
a 280-stall parking structure, as well as a
revitalized 2.7-acre City Park.
Given the scale of the project, designers
were given the opportunity to design much
more than a singular building--but a new
complex that would create a civic "heart."
The three new structures were placed
around the "new" City Park, which has
become the focus of the entire complex.
New barbecues, picnic tables, accent
lighting, water features, and a performance
area for special events have added a rich
variety of places where people can gather,
in large or small groups.
With LEED Silver certification from the U.S.
Green Building Council, the Brentwood
Civic Center is one of the greenest civic
facilities in the State. Through sustainability,
preservation, and community involvement,
the Center has become a place for the
people--and by the people--that reflects
their history, values, and ideals for the
future.
Enjoy this issue and, as always, please
keep the feedback coming.
