Most outside China have no idea of the developing riding clubs - the
Heilan club alone has more than 300 horses - and growth of imports into
this country, as it gears up to establish itself in the equestrian arts.

The Olympics and Paralympics have concluded
for another four years and, like many Australians,
we couldn't get enough of the equestrian
coverage. The dressage and showjumping
events were awe-inspiring, weren't they? And
the Eventers, deemed as prospective medal
winners going on past performances, rose above
the many set backs too which this discipline was
subjected, and came home with a sixth placing
for Australia.
The Olympic eventing competition at Greenwich
Park generated a great deal of interest from
the wider community, with many non-horse
enthusiasts appreciating the spectacle and
excitement for the first time.
The Paralympics was on the same huge scale
as the Olympics and it was good to see these
sportsmen and women receiving the recognition
they deserve. It was suggested by organisers
that the 2012 games would be remembered
as the ones that brought the Paralympics into
the mainstream of sport, and the commercial
response to this event could now mean these
paralympians can look at sport becoming a full
time occupation.
The FREE Hoofbeats e-Magazine preview will
have a pictorial coverage of the Olympics and
Paralympics and this can be accessed via the
on e-Magazine preview.
GRAPHIC IMAGE WARNING
You may have noticed in the contents that the
Reader's Story this issue has a warning about
graphic images. The horse that is the subject
of this story had a relatively small sarcoid that
over the years grew and grew, threatening its
life. Thanks to the owner's tenacity, the gelding
was treated and overcame what was essentially
a death sentence. The decision to publish
photographs of this condition at its worst was not
taken lightly, as they are disturbing. However, our
survey research shows that the majority of those
who read Hoofbeats are horsemen and women
who are actively interested in the welfare and
health of their horses. To have the opportunity
to gain knowledge on this insidious condition
and to see the exceptional results from the
drug used, we sincerely thank Cheryl McGaffin
for documenting and photographing Daniel's
journey and for sharing the information with all
readers.
We welcome your thoughts on the topic.
