Montague & Clay County
Hay Show & Forage Clinic will
be held October 3rd, 2017 at
Pullen Angus Ranch at 10 a.m.
If you have cattle, then hay
feeding time is just around the
corner. When supplementing
cattle with hay it is important to
know the quality of the hay you
are feeding and the nutritional
requirements of the livestock
consuming the hay. Protein
levels and TDN, total digestible
nutrients, are some important
numbers to look at. This year's
hay could be lacking in both
areas. So why not have it tested?
Plaques will be awarded to
winner in each of the following
categories: Round Bale and/
or Square Bale; Warm Season
Perennial Grass (bermuda,
native); Warm Season Annual
Grass (crabgrass, sudan type);
Cool Season Annual Grass
(ryegrass, small grain); Warm/
Cool Season Legumes (clovers,
vetch, alfalfa)
Winter supplementation
and hay production are
signifi cant production costs
for Beef producers. If your
eye is on profi tability, you
should pay close attention
to a cow's body condition,
forage (hay) quality and winter
protein supplementation
expenses. Forage quality has
a major infl uence on the type
and amount of supplement
required to meet a cow's daily
requirements.
This year there seems to
be hay on every acre. Don't
be fooled by appearance, or
fertilized, or weed sprayed
or even production history to
determine hay quality. The only
way to be certain is a laboratory
analysis of your hay samples.
Random forage samples
should be obtained that
represent all harvest dates and
all fi elds. 10% of your hay
bales should be sampled to
obtain a composite sample.
Classifying hay based on its
nutritive value would help you
as a producer to know the class
of livestock for which a bale of
hay is suited. For example, a
beef cow needs a minimum of
7% crude protein in her diet,
while a broodmare needs at
least 10% crude protein.
If you are interested in
having your hay tested and
entering the Montague County
Hay Clinic & Show, we have a
scheduled meeting on October
3rd at Pullen Angus Ranch,
17516 Hwy 82 South in
Bellevue beginning at 10 a.m.
If you want to enter the
Hay Show you will need to
have your samples into our
offi ce here at the Courthouse
in Montague by September
22nd. We have a hay probe
(for round bales) and forage
testing information here at the
Extension offi ce. The Clay &
Montague County Hay Show
is open to producers who have
produced hay in those counties.
*If you want your hay tested,
but don't want to enter the
show, we can help you make
decisions on that as well. By
testing now, you have plenty
of time to adjust your winter
feeding plans.
Along with the Hay Show,
James Rogers with The Noble
Foundation will be speaking to
producers on the results of hay
sampling and how to produce
quality hay. We invite you to
be a participant in the event,
even if you don't want to enter
the Hay Show, come have lunch
and learn with us. Dinner will
be sponsored by Wellington
State Bank of Bowie, Farm
Bureau and Pullen Angus .
