Meet
Dr. Sue Mandell
It is with great excitement that I join the Tri-Cities
Cancer Center as Medical Director and Radiation
Oncologist. The staff, equipment and infrastructure
of the Cancer Center offer the perfect blend of world-
class cancer treatment and supportive cancer care. My
active treatment interests include: radioactive seed
implantation for prostate cancer; Intensity Modulated
Radiation Therapy (IMRT)/Image-Guided Radiation
Therapy (IGRT) for breast, prostate, brain and head/
neck cancers. I have also been an active participant in
clinical trials.
I would like to take this opportunity to share with you a
little about my family and how it is that I chose to move
across the country to join the Tri-Cities Cancer Center
team:
My husband Steve grew up in the Seattle area and
considers Washington State home. The Northwest has
been an annual vacation destination for us enjoying the
people, the landscape, and visiting our extended family.
Steve and the boys have been spending summers in
Seattle for a number of years. Two years ago our eldest
son, Nate, moved to Seattle to study engineering at the
University of Washington. His younger brother Sam,
a high school junior, has aspirations to come west for
college as well. So the timing for my move was perfect!
Although it seems an interesting time in my medical
career to change locations, I am no stranger to moving
around. After graduating Boston College with a degree
in Biology, I received a full scholarship from the U.S.
Navy and attended medical school just outside of New
York City. My internship year was at the Portsmouth
Naval Medical Center in Virginia. In 1983, early during
that internship year, my mother was diagnosed with
breast cancer, and while accompanying her to all her
appointments, I developed a deep appreciation for the
field of oncology, and radiation therapy in particular.
Massachusetts was one of the few states at that time
in which radiation therapy consultation was standard
for all breast cancer patients. I had been interested in
cancer medicine, and radiation therapy was a specialty
that fascinated me for both clinical and technical
reasons.
In 1984, I moved yet again, this time to New York City
to begin a three year residency in Radiation Oncology
