The Taking of Pelham One, Two, Three (1974)
Directed by Joseph Sargent Saturday - November 9 - 3:00 p.m.
An outfit of heavily-armed men hijack a New York City subway car and take its passengers hostage for a hefty ransom. The menacing and highly skilled criminals test the limits of the understaffed transit police headed by Lt. Zachary Garber (Walter Matthau) and the city’s ineffectual mayor. Tensions build as it becomes apparent that at least one of the disguised men displays unpredictable, sociopathic tendencies, rendering negotiations exceptionally dangerous. After the film’s release, the NYC transit authority temporarily banned trains from leaving Pelham station at 1:23 to assuage fears. (35mm. 104 min. Rated R.)
Meet Me in St. Louis (1944)
Directed by Vincente Minnelli Saturday - December 7 3:00 p.m.
Vincente Minnelli’s classic musical features Judy Garland in the prime of her career at MGM, but the film’s real star is its heartfelt, charming story. As the affluent Smith family anxiously awaits the arrival of the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, patriarch Alonzo (Leon Ames) announces they’re moving to New York, threatening to upheave the idyllic life they all adore. Featuring the classic “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” the film also stars Margaret O’Brien, who won a special Juvenile Oscar for her portrayal as the precocious youngest daughter, Tootie. (2K DCP. 113 min. Not Rated.)
