Welcome to our first 2013 issue of LPA Studies;
this month's featured project is a fitting start to
the New Year.
The California State University (CSU), Fullerton,
Irvine Campus begins a fresh chapter for an
existing building designed by LPA as a multi-
tenant office facility for LBA Realty in 2002,
and then later turned into a bank building. Fast
forward to 2010, when we were hired by CSU,
Fullerton to convert the space into their new,
South County branch campus.
The two-story, 60,000-square-foot building is
unlike traditional Higher Education facilities
as the building is not part of an existing
educational campus. Our design challenge
was to create a place with a "campus feel"
and collegiate environments all within a
single building. Program elements along the
likes of a bookstore, fitness center, and other
social spaces had to be provided as well as
highly flexible instructional spaces, in a cost-
effective manner.
Given the lack of funding for Higher Education
entities, remote campus locations, like the
Irvine Campus are becoming more and more
important in providing affordable education
alternatives for Californians.
Fundamental in meeting the demands of this
project was the ability to provide integrated
services--where the synergies of architecture
and engineering create exciting and cost-
effective spaces, spaces well-suited for 21st
century learners.
Enjoy this issue and, as always, please keep
the feedback coming.
