The majority of us in the Southeast of Australia
sweltered through the hottest days on record
in early January and the accompanying
catastrophic fire conditions that resulted in
fires burning across many parts of Tasmania,
NSW, Victoria, Queensland and SA, with
extensive property losses in some states.
This very hot start to 2013 reinforces the need
for everyone with horses to be prepared for
the very real risk of fire that property owners
face every summer, plus the additional
animal management responsibilities required
to ensure our horse's well being over the hot
summer months. `All Ablaze', on page 39,
touches on the early fires in Tasmania .
Disasters are not `news one day and gone
the next', as people live with the after effects
for months and often years while they re-
establish their lives and property.
Future issues will keep you up to date with
the good samaritans who tirelessly offer their
help, the rebuilding process, the health of
horses injured and the step-by-step of re-
establishing equine facilities. If you have a
story to tell then we want to hear from you.
Our thoughts go out to all those who have
been affected.
The critically acclaimed War Horse is
currently wowing audiences in Melbourne and
moves to Sydney next month and Brisbane
from July. So many readers entered our
competition to win tickets to War Horse and
we congratulations our lucky winners (see the
Hoofbeats page on Facebook for details).
Hoofbeats has always endeavoured to
present readers with contributions from
leading equestrians across a range of
disciplines and highlight numerous means
to enjoy time with your horses. Western
Dressage is a relatively new sport yet it is
creating a great deal of interest in Europe and
here is Australia. While still in its infancy, it
offers another avenue for riders to test their
horses and training in an enjoyable way. If
you've ever watched western events and
thought you'd like to give it a try, or watched
dressage and thought you'd like to give it a
go, then Western Dressage could be perfect
for you. As you'll see in the article on page 34
you don't need a western horse.... so let us
know if you'll consider giving it a try.
With 2013 already underway we are
preparing our article list for future issues and,
while our `to do' list never seems to run out,
we always want to hear what article topics,
riders, trainers or establishments you would
like to see featured in your future magazines.
