Jennie Lorriston-Clarke West Australian riders were given the privilege and opportunity to work with one of the world’s Legendary Dressage Riders, Jennie Lorriston-Clarke. This came about through Swan River Horse Trials having brought her out to be Head of the Ground Jury for their event held at Brookleigh Equestrian Estate. The clinic was held at Brookleigh the three days after the event, and saw a mixture of eventing and dressage riders take part in the lessons. Jennie had an easy going manner of coaching and was very adaptable in the way she approached each horse, having a range or horses to coach from the lovely young but green, newly imported stallion Latin Lover owned by Heidi Emery, with Sophie Warren on Board, Young Event Rider Jessica Manson on board her 3 Star Eventer Legal Star and Paralympian Sharon Jarvis riding her 2014 WEG prospect Zafriah by Regardez Moi. Jennie had a simplistic approach to how the horse should go, there was no fussing and fiddling going on. The horse had to go forwards from the leg, into the hand, evenly and consistently, with the body of the horse following the line correctly, constantly reminding riders that they needed to remain in control of the horses’ shoulders at all times. It was a very forward and positive approach to coaching with riders encouraged to show the horse the way through a movement. There were no fancy tricks to riding, it was just good solid riding skills and horsemanship, which allowed the horses to grow in confidence from working through the basics. Jennie also worked through a couple of riders’ tests from the weekend invaluable for the riders to be able to get immediate feedback from Jennie as a judge and a coach and improve the movements that needed improving. As Jennie had already seen how the horse went when it competed she could also Sharon Jarvis on Zafirah, owned by Courtney Thompson, with Jennie Lorriston-Clarke. see how it trained and could implement a few ideas that could benefit the horse and rider for future competitions. Jennie enjoyed her trip to the West so much that she will be back in March 2013, combining her trip to judge at the Swan River Dressage competition with a three day clinic afterwards.
