Dr. John Droesch
is malignant (cancerous); benign tumors can grow
quickly, too. Since a Phyllodes tumor may resemble a
fibroadenoma, these two conditions are often mistaken
for each other. Tissue over the tumor may become red
or warm to the touch. Phyllodes tumors are most often
diagnosed in premenopausal women over the age of 50.
In very rare cases, adolescent girls may be diagnosed
with this type of breast tumor.
Surgical removal is the standard treatment for phyllodes
tumors. They do not respond well to chemotherapy or
hormonal therapies and the response to radiation is
questionable. The risk of recurrence is high. Malignant
tumors can recur even two years after treatment and
may spread to the lungs, bones, liver, chest wall and
possibly lymph nodes.
The majority of breast lumps are found by women
themselves, however, the vast majority of women do
not know how to perform a proper self-exam. Cindy
Miller, RN, is available to present information to
groups on this topic. Call (509) 737-3418 to schedule a
presentation and stop by the Cancer Center to obtain a
free BSE shower card.
