kath decided to start a
campaign to raise awareness in
the community and established the
Gynaecological Awareness Information
Network Inc. (GAIN), which has informed
and supported thousands of women.
Still, Kath is frustrated that in the 20 years
since she had gynaecological surgery, the
subject is still not openly discussed.
"it still appears that not a lot
has changed. Back then, I could not
believe the stigma and isolation I felt.
Even today, there is a lot of confusion
about whether the vulva is the vagina.
We all know what a penis and a testicle is,
so why the confusion about the female
genitalia?"
"i need publications such as
dare
to see the big picture and help
share the message. One day I hope I can
win over Woman's Day and The Australian
Women's Weekly."
her fight to break down the
barriers and stigmas attached to
gynaecological health has included
working to create a GYN senate inquiry
and a National GYN Centre and a string
of awards for raising the profile of
gynaecological health, including the
Order of Australia in 2009.
"despite 18 years of lobbying
and 10 awards, I don't need any more
awards, I need action from women to
help save lives and empower women
with knowledge," she said.
