and wellbeing. An analysis of over 1200 studies reported that most
studies noted practising a religion or spirituality made a positive
impact on health, both physically and mentally, with reductions
in anxiety, depression, substance abuse, alcohol, drugs, smoking
and suicide risk and improved outcomes in heart health patients,
increased survival in children with leukemia, blood pressure
reductions and improved immunity.
Prayer, yoga and meditation have shown direct health benefits
particularly on blood pressure, heart rate and balancing hormones.
religious beliefs also provide social connectedness and can shift
perspective on how life is viewed increasing positivity, reducing
depression and stress, which is associated with numerous
diseases. Okinawans and other long living cultures all share strong
community support networks, believed to be an important
contributor to longevity and wellbeing.
